Pupils may obtain their result slips from their respective schools from 12.00 noon on 20 Nov 2008.

On the same day, eligible pupils will also receive their option forms to select secondary schools from their respective primary schools. Pupils are required to hand the option forms to their parents.

Submission of Secondary One Option Form

In every sealed option form there will be a unique Secondary One Personal Identification Number (S1 PIN) which allows parents to submit the school choices for their child on-line via the Secondary One Internet System (S1-IS). The S1-IS is accessible 24 hours through the MOE Secondary One Posting website starting from 12.00 noon on 20 Nov 2008 to 3.00 pm on 26 Nov 2008.

Parents are strongly encouraged to carefully consider and complete the option form before logging on to the S1-IS, so that they can complete their on-line submission quickly and smoothly.

Alternatively, parents may also submit their child’s secondary school options through their child’s primary school. Submission at the primary schools will be from 12.00 noon to 3.00 pm on 20 Nov 2008; and 9.00 am to 3.00 pm on 21, 24, 25 and 26 Nov 2008.

Release of Secondary One Posting Results

The Secondary One posting results will be released on 18 Dec 2008. This year, parents will be able to receive the posting results through an additional channel, via SMS text messaging. To receive the SMS, parents just need to provide a local mobile phone number during the submission of their child’s school choices, either on-line via the S1-IS or at the child’s primary school.

Parents will thus be able to receive their child’s posting results through any of the following channels:
- S1-IS
- The Interactive Voice Response System (Tel: 6691-2066)
- Going to the child’s primary school
- SMS text messaging

Pupils are to report to their posted secondary schools on 19 Dec 2008 at 8.30 am.

For more information on the Secondary One Posting Exercise and S1-IS, parents can refer to the MOE Secondary One Posting website or Part One of the information booklet entitled “Choosing Your Secondary Schools” which had earlier been distributed to parents.

For enquiries, parents can call the MOE Customer Service Centre at 6872-2220 during office hours.

Class Gathering

Hi all...

We will be having our class gathering tomorrow at the following place:

Aloha Loyang and Resorts
Pool Terrace 7
159W Jalan Loyang Besar
Singapore 507020

Enquiry Hotline : 6581 9033

Some interesting facts about Gongshang Primary

Gongshang Primary School is located near Tampines Avenue 7; scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='For your information'/>
What Does PSLE Mean To Your Child?

Before PSLE, your child would already have sat through many examinations. In those exams, he is competing against his school mates.

However for PSLE, it is a different case. Your child will be competing at the national level, with all the Primary six students who are from the various schools in Singapore, to get into the best secondary schools of their choice. This can be demanding for your child at the age of 12.

In order for your child to excel in his PSLE, there are three critical things that he needs to pay attention to:

1. Knowing the Subjects
To excel in PSLE, your child needs to know and understand his subjects very well such as:
- what topics to study and among them, which topics are most important
- the important concepts and key points in every chapter
- how each chapter is related
- what types of questions will be set for the various topics
- how questions can be set for the various chapters and concepts
- how to answer the questions that will give him the highest possible marks

2. Having the Greatest Competitive Advantage
Does your child have a competitive advantage in terms of the way he studies, learns in school and revises for his exams?
When it comes to learning in school, over 95% of the students adopt the rote learning approach.
Rote learning is boring. It takes a lot of time and energy, and yet does not help him to retain key and important information in their long term memory. It is simply ineffective and inefficient.
To have the competitive edge in his PSLE, your child needs to be equipped with a range of advanced learning techniques that will help him do well. Examples are:
- Effective reading skill, i.e. the ability to speed read and at the same time, actively understand what he has read
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills
- Skill of summarizing
- Creative writing skill
- Active information recalling techniques
- Strong ability to build a large wealth of vocabulary that will help him comprehend what he reads and also answer the exams questions
- Effective revision method, such as ability to identify relevant information for the PSLE exams

3. Making the Fewest Mistakes
One common complaint from parents about their children not doing well in their exams is making careless mistakes.
People tend to commit more mistakes when they are under stress.
In exams like PSLE, your child will be experiencing tremendous amount of pressure and stress. To minimise the number of mistakes in exams, it is important to equip your child with the knowledge and skills on how to handle stress and to feel calm and relax.
On top of that, it is important to help your child to develop his inner inspiration of wanting to excel in his studies and exams; and hence he will be more careful with his work and therefore minimise the chance of making mistakes.
<img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/9008849117236731672-7631221593244458755?l=gsp65.blogspot.com' alt='' Yes! Understand why your child did not perform well for his SA1. At this age of 12 years, this child may not know what is before him. Although some students claim they plan their composition, after careful enquiry, you will realise very, very few students indeed plan their compositions. It is always an uphill task to persuade any student of the necessity of planning their composition since most of them have survived to-date without having to do so. "If it isn't broken, don't fix it" seems to be the over-riding principle of inertia for young students.

Well here's a new rule, "If you fail to plan, you plan to fail".You MUST plan.

Don't just use the first idea that pops into your head. That is quite like playing Russian Roulette. You're relying on pure luck whether that idea is a good or bad idea. We all know that it's a bad idea to answer any (test) paper relying on plain luck, but for some strange mysterious reason, when it comes to composition, students abandon all logic to trust in their Stars/Ancestors/Relevant Deity to provide them with inspiration. While we're at it, let's also walk across the PIE blindfolded. Remember: you MUST plan!

More often than not, the first idea that pops into your head is the most obvious idea. It also means it will be first idea that pops into every other student's head. Your composition will drown in a flood of hundreds of other almost exactly identical stories. Unless you relish the idea of writing the exact same thing as everybody else, consider other alternatives. Take for example a typical composition title: A Day At The Beach. I have marked at least hundreds of picnic compositions on that theme. By the time I have finished marking the hundredth picnic account, I'm just about ready to take commit ritual sepuku except thankfully, I'm not Japanese.

Some brighter sparks (that means you of course) add in a bit of originality and excitement by including a drowning, accident, criminals, daring rescue and so on. Unfortunately, the very same idea has occurred to all their classmates. Come on, Beach... Drowning... not exactly original material. Unfortunately, if you don't plan, that's the kind of story you will come up with. My point is, YOU MUST PLAN! Or have I said that already?

How To Plan
Now that I have made put my point across, we ask: how to plan? Strict planning formulas are almost as bad as no plan. I've seen some quite horrifying tables and guidelines in student guides that has the words "Introduction", "Body" and "Conclusion" somewhere in there. Well, actually I'm making that up. But my point is - there is no instant formula. No great author ever came up with an original work by filling in some table. Well, maybe except Adam Smith and we all know what happened to him.

Just guide yourself with the following basic questions: Who, When, Where, Why, How and What. This is not meant to be a magic formula. The reason why I suggest these is because they are the most basic questions I could think of. If you can think of anything more basic, please e-mail me your suggestion. The order in which you answer them is also not important except What is always answered last, and I will explain why later.

Who
Who are the characters in your story? You? A 3rd party? Your friends / classmates / family / relatives? John? Who?

Pick your characters to improve your story. If the topic is A Day At The Beach, pick characters that will add to the story. Naturally, throwing in a sky-diving champion would be better than throwing in a lawyer. But what would be better than a sky-diving champion? A sky-diving grandmother? A sky-diving iguana? Don't take my word for it, try it out for yourself.

Where
Where did it happen? In School/at the graveyard/in the toilet?Of course sometimes you can be limited as in the example A Day At the Beach would have to happen at the beach. But a good student always asks, which part of the beach? A better student asks where is this beach? It can range anywhere from East Coast Park to Madagascar.

When
What day did the story occur? Yesterday? Your birthday? Last Christmas? September 1939? When?Don't forget the time! What time did it happen? It is shocking how many students forget about the time. Obviously a story set in the afternoon would be very different from one set in the middle of the night. When did it happen? In the morning? At night? While you were in the toilet? Eating cornflakes? Reading the newspapers? Doing all three?Have fun with the facts. There is no limit.

Why
Why? What do you mean why? If the topic is "A Heartbreaking Christmas", why was it heartbreaking? If it was "A Joyful Reunion", obviously it is not necessary to ask why it was joyful. All reunions are joyful except maybe old school reunions but that's another story. Why were they separated? Why did they take so long to reunite? For some topics it may be harder to explain why. For example, "A Day At The Beach". Why were you there? Was it for a picnic (no!) or for some other reason (yes)?

How
How did it happen? This may overlap with "What" which I will explain later. Sometimes people have more fun reading how something happens than the fact that it did happen. Especially if the method is especially clever or amusing. Sometimes, you don't need to tell how something happened (how you went to the beach), sometimes you do (how the prisoner escaped from jail). Use your common sense.

What
Lastly, What happened? This is a blow by blow account of the whole story. In other words, it is a concise summary of everything you intend to put into your story. Once you have put together WHO, WHEN, WHERE, WHY and HOW, you are now ready to say answer WHAT happened. It is like putting meat on the skeleton of an animal except without all the blood and stuff. Actually it isn't like it at all, but I could not think of a better analogy.

A NEGATIVE EXAMPLE
Back to the example of A Day At The Beach. One teacher I know told me about a student who wrote about a picnic he had with his friends. It began optimistically with them finding a nice shady spot to set up. It went downhill from there as he began to narrate they had sandwiches (nice delicious sandwiches), fried beehoon (nice delicious fried beehoon), fishballs (nice delicious fishballs) and packet drinks (nice delic... you get the idea). By the time the teacher got to packet drinks, it was so boring it could physically drive breath out of your body. If you are that student, I apologise for using you as a negative example.

Be Realistic
Use your common sense. Don't go overboard. A story that is wholly absurd is as bad as a story which is boring. Don't insult your reader's intelligence by expecting them to believe ridiculously exaggerated heroism. Really don't. Really. If you set up your story right, you won't have to resort to extreme solutions. Nobody is going to believe you beat a man with a machine gun by dodging through a rain of bullets and karate chopping him on the neck.

Last Words
Have fun. Planning makes it more fun, not less. Because it depends only on your imagination, every student is as good as another. It is the only place where the competition is completely fair. Go for it.

Changes to NAPFA Norms

Please visit the following site for the NAPFA requirements:

www.moe.gov.sg/media/press/2006/files/pr20060106-annex4b.pdf

The Creation of the Teacher

The Good Lord was creating teachers. It was His sixth day of 'overtime' and He knew that this was a tremendous responsibility for teachers would touch the lives of so many impressionable young children.
An angel appeared to Him and said, "You are taking a long time to figure this one out.""Yes," said the Lord, " but have you read the specs on this order?"

TEACHER:

must stand above all students, yet be on their level,

must be able to do 180 things not connected with the subject being taught,

must run on coffee and leftovers,

must communicate vital knowledge to all students daily and be right most of the time,

must have more time for others than for herself/himself,

must have a smile that can endure through pay cuts, problematic children, and worried parents,

must go on teaching when parents question every move and others are not supportive,

must have 6 pair of hands.

"Six pair of hands," said the angel, "that's impossible!"

"Well, " said the Lord, "it is not the hands that are the problem. It is the three pairs of eyes that are presenting the most difficulty!"

The angel looked incredulous, "Three pairs of eyes...on a standard model?"

The Lord nodded His head, "One pair can see a student for what he is and not what others have labeled him as. Another pair of eyes is in the back of the teacher's head to see what should not be seen, but what must be known. The eyes in the front are only to look at the child as he/she 'acts out' in order to reflect, " I understand and I still believe in you", without so much as saying a word to the child."

"Lord, " said the angel, " this is a very large project and I think you should work on it tomorrow".

"I can't," said the Lord, " for I have come very close to creating something much like Myself. I have one that comes to work when he/she is sick.....teaches a class of children that do not want to learn....has a special place in his/her heart for children who are not his/her own.....understands the struggles of those who have difficulty....never takes the students for granted..."

The angel looked closely at the model the Lord was creating. "It is too soft-hearted," said the angel.

"Yes," said the Lord, "but also tough, You can not imagine what this teacher can endure or do, if necessary".

"Can this teacher think?" asked the angel.

"Not only think," said the Lord, "but reason and compromise."

The angel came closer to have a better look at the model and ran his finger over the teacher's cheek.

"Well, Lord, " said the angel, your job looks fine but there is a leak. I told you that you were putting too much into this model. You can not imagine the stress that will be placed upon the teacher."

The Lord moved in closer and lifted the drop of moisture from the teacher's cheek. It shone and glistened in the light.

"It is not a leak," He said, "It is a tear."

"A tear? What is that?" asked the angel, "What is a tear for?"

The Lord replied with great thought, " It is for the joy and pride of seeing a child accomplish even the smallest task. It is for the loneliness of children who have a hard time to fit in and it is for compassion for the feelings of their parents. It comes from the pain of not being able to reach some children and the disappointment those children feel in themselves. It started to descend smoothly and he heaved a sigh of relief.

Spelling 6

extraterrestrial

influence

Pandora’s box

become confused

superhuman strength

temporarily

strangled a fearsome lion

Herculean strength

frequently

a winged horse

daring adventures

a symbol of purity

a thunderous voice

thunderbolt

extremely involved details

haughty

became outraged

simple yet reasonable

a shoal of enormous swordfish

vicious

The meaning of Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year (simplified Chinese: 农历新年; traditional Chinese: 農曆新年; pinyin: Nónglì xīnnián; literally: "Agrarian Calendar New Year") or Spring Festival (simplified Chinese: 春节; traditional Chinese: 春節; pinyin: Chūnjié) is the most important of the traditional Chinese holidays. It is sometimes called the Lunar New Year, especially by people outside China. It is an important holiday in East Asia. The festival traditionally begins on the first day of the first lunar month (Chinese: 正月; pinyin: zhēng yuè) in the Chinese calendar and ends on the 15th; this day is called Lantern Festival (simplified Chinese: 元宵节; traditional Chinese: 元宵節; pinyin: yuánxiāojié).

Chinese New Year's Eve is known as Chúxī (除夕). Chu literally means "pass" and xi means "Eve".

Chinese New Year starts with the New Moon on the first day of the new year and ends on the full moon 15 days later. The 15th day of the new year is called the Lantern Festival, which is celebrated at night with lantern displays and children carrying lanterns in a parade.

The Chinese calendar is based on a combination of lunar and solar movements. The lunar cycle is about 29.5 days. In order to "catch up" with the solar calendar the Chinese insert an extra month once every few years (seven years out of a 19-year-cycle). This is the same as adding an extra day on leap year. This is why, according to the solar calendar, the Chinese New Year falls on a different date each year.

New Year's Eve and New Year's Day are celebrated as a family affair, a time of reunion and thanksgiving. The celebration was traditionally highlighted with a religious ceremony given in honor of Heaven and Earth, the gods of the household and the family ancestors.

The sacrifice to the ancestors, the most vital of all the rituals, united the living members with those who had passed away. Departed relatives are remembered with great respect because they were responsible for laying the foundations for the fortune and glory of the family.

The presence of the ancestors is acknowledged on New Year's Eve with a dinner arranged for them at the family banquet table. The spirits of the ancestors, together with the living, celebrate the onset of the New Year as one great community. The communal feast called "surrounding the stove" or weilu. It symbolizes family unity and honors the past and present generations.

Mathematics Resources

ALGEBRA

Algebraic expression in one variable:
- Use a letter to represent an unknown number and write a simple algebraic expression in one variable for a given situation
- Link 1 The throat and tonsils develop small ulcers while the hands, feet, and diaper area are affected by a rash with characteristic vesicles (very small blisters). This is usually a mild illness with the rash healing in 5 to 7 days.

Blisters on the palm and fingers. Both adults and children can be affected, but young children below five years are particularly susceptible.

Symptons :

fever

sore throat

ulcers in the throat, mouth and tongue

headache

a rash with vesicles (small blisters, 3-7 mm) on hands, feet and diaper area. Symptomatic treatment is given to provide relief from fever, aches and pain.
Treatment with antibiotics is not effective and is not indicated. Acetaminophen can be used to treat fever. Aspirin should not be used in viral illnesses in children under age 12 years.
Salt water mouth rinses (½ teaspoon of salt to 1 glass of warm water) may be soothing if the child is able to rinse without swallowing. Ensure an adequate fluid intake because swallowing may be painful. Extra fluid is needed when a fever is present.

HFMD in Singapore
HFMD is present all year round in Singapore. Outbreaks do occur in childcare centres, kindergartens and schools. HFMD became legally notifiable on 1 October 2000. Although usually a mild disease, it has been associated with fatalities usually due to complications involving the heart and nervous system.

Advice for parents
Parents are advised to consult a doctor early if their child has symptoms of HFMD. They should also be alert to any change in their child's normal behaviour, e.g. irritation and sleepiness. Should they refuse to eat or drink, have persistent vomiting or drowsiness, parents should bring their child immediately to hospital.

Prevention
Children should be kept away from crowded public places (such as schools, preschools, play groups, markets and public transport) if they show signs of infection. Family members are advised to follow good hygiene practices, including frequent hand washing, to limit the spread of the infection.

Welcome Note

Dear Parents/Guardians/Students of P6.5,

I would like to inform you that I will be the form teacher of Primary 6.5 this year.

Besides taking charge of the class administrative matters, I will be teaching the core academic subjects; English, Mathematics and Science, as well as Social Studies.

As 6.5 form teacher, I am committed to bring out the best in all the students.
